Books - Tell the Doctor ...

"Tell the Doctor" was originally compiled to help doctors in Orba (Alicante) communicate with their non-Spanish speaking patients. From these small beginnings, it is now used all over Spain. It now also contains information to help you use the various services that are available to those who live or come on holiday here.
The phrases contained in this book are to help you tell your doctor what your problem is and to then be able to understand what his diagnosis and treatment are.
A book this size can only cover the basic problems that may arise but it should give you enough to get out of trouble. Even if your Spanish is good, when you are in pain or under stress it is not always easy to think of the right word or phrase.
The book is divided up into sections that tell the doctor something about you and your condition, and other sections that the doctor can use to tell you about his diagnosis and treatment. If you cannot speak Spanish well, or maybe not at all, you can just point to an appropriate phrase. Or the doctor can point to a phrase and then you indicate if it is true or false (nod or shake your head). If there are alternatives (printed in italics), point to the word or phrase that applies to you. You can also copy out phrases onto a piece of paper before you go to the doctor, so that you have everything you want to ask him in one place. Use the vocabularies to change them as necessary.

Deutschsprachige haben im Kontakt mit spanischen Haus- und Fachärzten, im Hospital, in der Klinik, oder in der Apotheke oft unnötige Sprachbarrieren. Für Englischsprachige gibt es seit einigen Jahren das zweisprachige Wörterbuch "Tell the Doctor", welches mit hunderten von medizinischen Fachausdrücken, Redewendungen und allgemeinen Informationen über Wohlbefinden, Krankheit und Sterben praktische Hilfestellungen bietet.
Übersetzer Jan Meijer, seit mehreren Jahren im Ruhestand in Spanien ansässig, nahm sich dieser Herausforderung an und erstellte die Niederländisch-Spanische Ausgabe. Letztere erschien unter dem Titel "Vertel de Dokter ..." (www.verteldedokter.es). Das Interesse war sehr groß und die Erstauflage war schnell vergriffen. Mittlerweile hat sich der Übersetzer – nach entsprechenden Bitten seitens deutschsprachiger Freunde und Bekannte – auch an eine deutsche Übersetzung des gleichen Wörterbuches gewagt, welche seit Januar 2008 erhältlich ist, 100 Seiten beträgt und via das Bestellformblatt dieser Webseite bestellt werden kann. Der deutsche Facharzt, Urologe Dr. Le Houcq mit langjähriger Erfahrung in Spanien, war bereit die medizinischen Fachausdrücke zu prüfen und hat auch das Vorwort geschrieben. Journalist Hans Oudendorp hat die Schlussredaktion übernommen.

Actuellement, de plus en plus de francophones venant en Espagne en tant que touriste ou, pour s'y installer comme résident permanent, ont, également, plus souvent à faire avec les médecins ou autres membres du corps médical parlant l'espagnol. Il s'ensuit alors d'inutiles problèmes de communication en rapport avec le langage. Dans les hôpitaux, il y a parfois un interprète présent, mais chez le médecin traitant, le dentiste ou le pharmacien, on doit pouvoir résoudre soi-même ces problèmes. Après l'introduction réussie, sur le marché, des versions néerlandaise et allemande de la brochure initiale en anglais "Tell the Doctor" et l'intérêt qu'elle a suscité dans la communauté francophone d'Espagne, deux "pensionados" ont pensé qu'il était nécessaire d'en réaliser une en FRANÇAIS-ESPAGNOL. Dans cette brochure vous trouverez des informations générales sur la sécurité sociale et les soins de santé espagnols; que faire pendant les vacances à l'étranger, comment fonctionne le transport en ambulance et beaucoup d'autres tuyaux utiles.

Na het invoeren van de nieuwe zorgverzekeringswet per 1 januari 2006 in Nederland, kregen meer Nederlandse residenten in Spanje te maken met Spaanstalige artsen. In ziekenhuizen is soms een tolk aanwezig maar bij huisarts, tandarts of apotheek moet men het meestal zelf zien op te lossen.
Bij Hallo Weekblad kwamen al snel brieven binnen met het verzoek een boekje te publiceren met medische termen. Nu bestond zo´n boekje al in het Engels en het lag dus voor de hand daar gebruik van te maken. Tolk/vertaler Jan Meijer nam het initiatief en na verkregen toestemming van schrijfster Jenny Bussey van "Tell the Doctor" ging hij aan de slag. Huisarts Max Meertens, met een jarenlange ervaring in Spanje, was bereid de medische termen te controleren, dr. Hans Bender schreef het voorwoord en Hans Oudendorp verzorgde de eindredactie.
